Above you will find several signs in front of shops and businesses on the south side of the Square in Downtown Newark, Ohio.
Above you will see the initial signage on North 4th Street as one enters the gateway to the downtown area from St. Rt. 16 (should be 161).
I can not believe with all the haggling of the city's departments over economic
development, planing and property maintenance help can not be found to obtain
a grant to establish financial help for the store and business owners to coordinate an
effort for attractive signs. A clean up of the home made and painted over
signs currently seen around the downtown area, would make Downtown Newark a
more inviting place to shop and do business.

Grants? Oh no. If one is going to be in business, they should be able to come up with a decent sign using their own resources.
I would fully agree that there are some that are awful, but I do not think that the taxpayers should pick up the bill with a grant for their lacking. This is a problem that government cannot fix. Many of these businesses are complaining that parking is the problem downtown.
