Definition of a Hawaii Moment..........

Presidents Obama's defines what Rahm Emanuel meant by the President's first debate being a "Hawaii Moment":

"What he was probably referring to—he and I, when we were in the Oval Office sometimes and the banks looked like they were melting down and the Afghan war is raging and the auto industry is on the verge of collapse, and we’d sit here at the end of the day and we’d have little fantasies about us taking our families and just moving to Hawaii and opening up a T-shirt shack on the North Shore, and we’d just sell T-shirts and maybe smoothies and sit there and watch the waves. So that might have been the reference he was making."

A little Dab will do ya...........................

This sign for the famous Vicks VapRub is missing one way to use the product almost everyone has grown up with. A small dab in the middle of your mustache, just below your nose helps make diaper changing a breeze.

FLORENCE AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL

I think of myself very lucky to have visited this cemetery and have driven by it several times viewing how impressive it appears from the highway. On Veterans Day, I think of this.....

The Florence American Cemetery and Memorial site in Italy covers 70 acres. The wooded hills that frame its western perimeter rise several hundred feet. Between the two entrance buildings, a bridge leads to the burial area where the headstones of 4,402 of our military dead are arrayed in symmetrical curved rows upon the hillside. They represent 39 percent of the U.S. Fifth Army burials originally made between Rome and the Alps. Most died in the fighting that occurred after the capture of Rome in June 1944. Included among them are casualties of the heavy fighting in the Apennines Mountains shortly before the war's end. On May 2, 1945 the enemy troops in northern Italy surrendered.

Blackberry vs Apple..............

One year ago this month, I was attending a Licking County Tweetup at Velvet Ice Cream. Everyone was shooting photos and movies while the gang tasted different flavors of ice cream. As I attempted to shoot a short video clip with my Blackberry, Sean Carpenter was making the motion of someone using an old movie projector with the hand crank on the side. This made my decision.

The next day I purchased the Iphone 4s and struggled. The Blackberry was the perfect business machine for me. Database, texting, emails and slowly reading the local paper, counter offers emailed to me and getting a web site once in a while. I fought the Iphone for three months, no key pad was my big beef, next was the battery until after google research made some quality adjustments.

Finally the Ipone became adjusted to me! Besides the email, database and texting it has opened a new world. Receiving counter offers and purchase agreements is a breeze as well as filling out a form. (at this time I have not had anyone sign their name on my Iphone like I do with my Ipad). Most of my blog post are written and posted from the Iphone. I no longer have embarrassing and extensive waits for information to fully arrive.

The speed, the array of opportunities with apps has been amazing. The large test was the camera and photos of fire incidents. I can say, during the past ten months all of my photos published by the Newark Advocate and other media have all been shot with my Iphone. Several fire video are posted on You Tube by using the phone and sent directly from the fire scene.

After one year, I vote for Iphone. Wish Tuesday election goes as well.

Keeping juiced up..................

The photo above from USATODAY.com shows someone who had electric to set up a cell/computer charging station outside their home for those without electric. This reminded me of Licking Memorial Hospital after the June 29, 2012 storm that hit Licking County. All over the main floor of the hospital you found cell phone and their charges connected to an outlet while the owners were cooling off and enjoying the great cafeteria's food..

23 mile, free-fall statistics....................

From TIME.com

-90 degrees Fahrenheit: Minimum air temperature Baumgartner’s specially-designed pressurized spacesuit can withstand.

-10 degrees Fahrenheit: Air temperature predicted 23 miles up as Baumgartner steps out of his capsule.

Less than 1%: Air pressure at the altitude of Baumgartner’s jump, as a percentage of that at sea level.

55 stories: Height of the 30-million-cubic-foot helium balloon that will hoist Baumgartner and his 2,900-pound protective capsule into space.

2: Number of practice runs before Tuesday’s record-breaking attempt. His first practice fall was from 71,000 feet in March 2012, and his second was from 97,000 feet in July.

3: Number of cameras attached to Baumgartner’s suit to record his descent. He’ll have one on each thigh and one on his chest pack.

5: Number of records Baumgartner’s jump will break if successful. He’s aiming to be the first human to ever break the sound barrier in free-fall and to claim the records for highest free-fall altitude, highest manned balloon flight and longest free-fall. His jump platform is believed to be the largest manned balloon in history.

5 minutes and 35 seconds: Amount of time Baumgartner is expected to free-fall.

QVC...the show must go on..............

From TIME.com

On QVC, the show — and the sale — must go on.

When a QVC guest host collapsed on live television, her co-host continued to hawk their product while propping up his associate’s unconscious body. During Sunday night’s sales, QVC host Dan Hughes was joined by QVC guest host Cassie Slane. The duo was trying to sell a kid-friendly Android tablet, but midway through the live broadcast, Slane clutched her chest and fainted. Without skipping a beat, the QVC camera cut to a a shot of the product. Meanwhile, Hughes, the professional pitchman, asked if Slane was okay, and then continued to tout the FunTab Pro tablet’s merits. QVC’s Carolyn Gracie replaced Slane and finished the segment with Hughes.

Boomer job seeking habits..................

Baby Boomers. Interestingly enough, the children of the ’60s are using social networks, especially LinkedIn, more than other generations for their job search — 29 percent, compared to 23 percent of Gen Y and 27 percent of Gen X. Also somewhat surprising, the Boomers are the most likely to conduct an online job search, though the vast majority of all job seekers do so — 96 percent of Boomers, compared to 92 percent and 95 percent of Gen Y and Gen X, respectively. Boomers, it seems, may be slightly more likely to search online for jobs because they’ve been unemployed longer, and the kinds of jobs they tend to seek (corporate, well-paid) are found at job boards and other online sources. Baby Boomers also take more pains to prepare for job interviews than the younger generations: 85 percent of Boomers take the time to view the company’s website before interviewing, and 64 percent search for news related to the company beforehand, compared to 78% and 58% for Gen X and 71% and 53% for Gen Y. Again, the need for better preparation may be related to the kinds of jobs Boomers are applying for, in which a solid understanding and interest in the business is required before being hired.

Curiosity's self portrait..................

09.07.2012

On Sol 32 (Sept. 7, 2012) the Curiosity rover used a camera located on its arm to obtain this self portrait. The image of the top of Curiosity's Remote Sensing Mast, showing the Mastcam and Chemcam cameras, was acquired by the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI). The angle of the frame reflects the position of the MAHLI camera on the arm when the image was taken. The image was acquired while MAHLI's clear dust cover was closed.

The image was taken on a day when MAHLI and other instruments and tools on the turret were being inspected using the rover's Mastcams and Navcams. The MAHLI cover was in the closed position in order to inspect the dust cover to ensure that the cover, its hinge, and the volume it sweeps when it opens are clear of debris.
