LENT

My sacrifice for Lent is giving up chocolate in baked goods. Chocolate topping on ice cream is permitted because it is cooked.

During the BIA's home show last night, Vicki Crist of the Licking County Chamber brought to me a sample of chocolate cake, I had to explain why I was not able to enjoy the cake. Besides, if I had eaten the cake it would have forced me into no chocolate baked goods until the Tuesday after Easter. I have already screwed up twice, so far.

This photo shows a what I consider a ridiculous portion of a Pecan Ball.

RULE OF THUMB: IF THE ICE CREAM BOWL'S DIAMETER IS NOT AT LEAST 75% OF THE SPOON'S LENGTH IT IS NOT WORTH ORDERING, IT BECOMES TEASE.

Gracie Allen & George Burns are back!

Last night I arrived home with two pizzas to Mrs. Guanciale and her two sisters waiting for dinner.

Everyone jumps out of their chairs, I am thinking they are terribly hungry or I had done something wrong. Then everyone starts screaming, "Gracie & George are back".

During the past several summers this particular mallard couple have hung out in our rear yard, they come up to our patio for free bread & crackers between 5-6:00pm. It is like clockwork.

I am not sure how they were assigned names, the mallard drake does not smoke a cigar, but the hen kind of sounds like Gracie Allen.

More George & Gracie here.

St. Patrick's Day History

I know many people think St. Patrick's Day started in 1952, but actually during 461AD upon the death of St. Patrick.

My sister sent me the History.com three minute video to explain how we arrived at our traditions today.

By the way, it is suppose to be boiled bacon and potatoes, not corn beef.

St. Patrick's Day

Ronny
A nickname for a mustache in Ireland , and what you get on your lip after your first pull from a glass of Guinness. It's a good thing. The head is the bitterest part of the beer. Drill down through that layer of foam. If you don't get a ronny, you're drinking it wrong.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

Yesterday afternoon hundreds of so called bowlers gathered at the Valley Bowling Alley in Heath, Ohio to raise money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Licking and Perry County.

Watch a short film of the fun here.

CARD CHECK

Kurt's opinion

Chamber's opinion

My opinion:
I am sick and tired of the Federal, State and Local governments trying to protect everyone. Card Check is a good example of a bunch of politicians (with most of them never having a real job) trying to support both sides of an issue and blotching up our country.

TEAM WORK & FATAL FIRE

Newark Fire Department contained a fatal fire at 414 Mt. Vernon Road this morning about 4:00AM. Lost of life due to a fire is against of all principals a firefighter has trained for during their career. The single family home was suppose to be vacant.
Team work is such an important part of careers. Above, the right photo shows the entire Battalion led by Asst. Chief Spurgeon mustering behind NFD Rescue-1, to discuss what took place, if anyone would have done anything different fighting the fire and asking if anyone had any questions or comments.

If you are a team leader, you should muster your crew together and discuss the issues at hand and like Chief Spurgeon, ask if anyone has any comments. If you are scared of asking for comments, maybe you should not be the team leader.
This post was held until after I personally confirmed that the information had been released to the local media.

THREE GLOVE FIRE NIGHT

I own three pair of structural firefighting gloves, last night with two different fires and being soak to the bone, all three pair were used. This is a first, the leather drys quickly and are back in service this morning.
First, a three alarm fire on James Street (above right) approximately a 8,000 square foot building. I arrived right behind the first due engine and shot this photo. Over 70 firefighters were able to have this fire under control just shy under five hours, the alarm came in shortly after 7:00pm.
Second reported fire came in at 2:00am at 199 West Church in Newark. You will notice the large red "X" attached to the front of the home. This sign tells firefighters not to enter the home and only fight the fire defensively from the exterior, due to the condition of the home. Due to a defensive position, both the neighboring multi family homes very close to the fire home were evacuated to neighbor's homes and standing by medics. Two firefighters were transported to LMH due to exhaustion, it was a long night for Chief John Clouse's platoon and for me.
